Automatic pension enrolment backed by employers
A survey by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has revealed that 56% of businesses back Government plans to introduce an automatic pension enrolment scheme to encourage more people to save for their retirement.
Some 81% of employers said they planned to match or improve on their existing contribution levels when the scheme comes into force. The scheme is due to be introduced in 2012 for workers aged between 22 and the state pension age, and will see employers having to enrol workers into either an existing scheme that meets pension reform requirements or the National Employment Savings Trust. They can also set up a new pension scheme.
