New ICO fines for firms that lose client data
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has been given new powers under data protection laws to impose heavy fines on businesses and organisations that lose client data.
From 6 April, the ICO can fine firms up to £500,000 for breaching the Data Protection Act 1998. Previously it could impose fines of up to a maximum of £5,000. The ICO has issued guidance on its new powers. It says the penalties it issues will be proportionate with the size and wealth of the organisation accused of the breach.
