Scottish Government approves tobacco display ban
MSPs in the Scottish Parliament have approved a Bill that will ban the display of cigarettes and tobacco products in Scotland.
The Tobacco and Primary Medical Services (Scotland) Bill also includes provisions for fixed penalty notices for retailers who sell tobacco to under 18s and a registration scheme for tobacco retailers. The Scottish Grocers' Federation (SGF) has called the display ban a "policy gimmick", which will "impose a substantial regulatory burden on retailers". The display ban will come into force in 2011 for larger retailers, and smaller retailers have until 2013 to comply.
