Number of empty shops on high street increases

The number of vacant stores on British high streets has reached as high as one in five in some areas, according to the latest figures from retail and leisure data research firm Local Data Company.

In Kent, the Midlands and the North East around a fifth of shops stand empty, while across the whole of Britain just over 12% of all shops are vacant. Shop vacancies increased by 100% during the first half of 2009, and by 25% during the second half.
