ICO granted new powers to charge £500,000 penalty for data breach

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) will have the power to fine organisations up to £500,000 for data breaches from 6 April 2010.

The new powers are designed to deter serious data security breaches. When deciding on monetary penalties, the ICO will consider the seriousness of the breach, as well as what steps the organisation had taken to prevent a breach.
