"Controversial" farm legislation comes into force
EU legislation that requires all sheep to undergo electronic identification (EID) came into force across the UK on 31 December 2009.
EID is now mandatory for all sheep born on or after this date. However, it has been called "one of the most controversial and bitterly opposed" pieces of legislation by farmers' representatives, who believe the scheme is disproportionate and damaging to the farming industry.
