Law change allows private hire businesses to provide bus services

The Local Services (Operation by Licensed Hire Cars) Regulations 2009 came into force on 27 November, which allow owners of private hire vehicles (PHV) to use their vehicles to provide local bus services.

Under the Regulations, PHV owners can apply for a special public service licence so they can operate this service. The Regulations apply in England (outside of London), Wales and Scotland. The Department for Transport (DfT) says this new law will be beneficial for those living in rural areas.
