Government launches consultation on £500,000 penalty for data breaches

The Government has launched a consultation on introducing a maximum penalty of £500,000 for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act 1998.

The Ministry of Justice is seeking responses on the maximum Civil Monetary Penalty that can be imposed by the Information Commissioner. The consultation is open to both individual data controllers and representative groups and closes on 21 December 2009.
