Ruling on beliefs leaves legislation open to employee abuse, claim HR experts
A recent legal ruling that an employee's environmental beliefs should be protected by equality law could open the floodgates for other workers to abuse the law, employment experts have warned.
In early November 2009, a judge ruled that an employee at a property firm had been made redundant based on his views on climate change and the environment. The judge agreed and said that these views are on a par with religious and philosophical beliefs. However, employment experts have told Personnel Today magazine that belief is subjective and the way the laws have been interpreted leaves them "wide open for people to abuse" them.
