National Minimum Wage should extend to all apprentices, urges TUC
The National Minimum Wage (NMW) should be extended to all apprentices who are currently exempt, the Trade Unions Congress (TUC) has recommended.
Currently, apprentices under the age of 19 and older apprentices in the first year of their course are not entitled to NMW. The TUC proposes three new hourly rates for apprentices based on their age. TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber warns that "some employers are exploiting apprentices by paying as little as £2 an hour".
