EU cookie law to be introduced
A law requiring advertisers to gain computer users' consent before using cookies has been approved by the European Union (EU) as part of a reform of privacy and electronic communications regulations.
The current rules permit advertisers to use cookies if Internet users are notified and given the option to opt out of cookies being stored on their machines. The new rules will require consent from a user to have the cookies stored, which the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) says could lead to users being "bombarded" with pop-ups requesting their permission to accept cookies. The new measure is expected to come into effect within the next 18 months.
