Tax returns delayed by post strike could appeal against penalty
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has hinted that it will waive the usual £100 penalty for the late filing of paper tax returns (which are due on 31 October) if it believes the sender has been affected by the postal strikes planned by the Communication Workers Union (CWU).
A spokesperson for the HMRC said: "If you post it on October 25 and there is a strike, then that will have been done in good time so your penalty will be reduced to nil." The taxman has estimated that around 9.2 million people are expected to file a paper return this year. The CWU strikes are planned for Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd October.
