MP urges firms to take advantage of EU Services Directive
Business Minister Ian Lucas is calling for businesses, including small and medium-sized firms, to make use of the changes that the EU Services Directive will bring when it comes into force at the end of the year.
The Directive aims to reduce the red tape burden on service-based businesses that wish to trade in the single market. According to Mr Lucas, such businesses account for around 70% of gross domestic product (GDP) in the UK but make up just a fifth of cross-border trade in the EU. The Directive is supposed to lower prices for consumers and give them greater choice, and will ensure that each EU country establishes a web portal giving businesses the legal information they need in order to trade in another country. The Directive will be implemented in the UK under the Provision of Services Regulations 2009.
