Forced retirement is legal, rules High Court
Employers are entitled by law to force an employee to retire at the age of 65, the High Court has ruled.
Charities Age Concern and Help the Aged had challenged the law, claiming it is in breach of the European Union's (EU) Equal Treatment at Work Directive. However, the judge ruled that an employer can legally end employment for someone aged 65, without redundancy payment, and refuse to employ someone over that age. The Government has announced it will carry out a review of the law related to the compulsory retirement age.
