Consumer confidence rises in September
Building society Nationwide's monthly Consumer Confidence Index shows that confidence in the economy among UK consumers rose by six points between August and September this year.
The Index also shows that consumers are optimistic about the future, with 39% stating they think the economic situation in six months' time will be better than it is now. However, a spokesperson for Nationwide said that any recovery is likely to be "sluggish".
