Shake-up of Scottish licensing laws begins

Scotland's pubs and clubs must no longer advertise irresponsible drinks promotions from today, 1 September, as the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 comes fully into effect.

The law also changes the way in which supermarkets and shops can sell alcohol - from today they can only sell it in a designated area. Soft drinks should be reasonably priced under the new legislation, and tap water should be free. However, retail groups have said the new laws are confusing for shop owners, and have accused the Scottish Government of not doing enough to inform consumers of changes.
