Small retailers get £5m fund to secure premises
Small retailers will be able to apply for funding to help secure their premises and protect them from crime under a scheme announced by the Home Office.
As part of the Retail Crime Action Plan (RCAP), there will be a £5 million fund available to small firms in 50 priority areas across the UK. Business owners will be able to apply for up to £3,000 to purchase equipment such as alarms or security grills. Applications for the fund will be accepted from mid-August. The RCAP also includes a risk assessment tool for firms, where owners can complete an online questionnaire to identify how they can reduce the risk of crime. The announcement comes as the British Retail Consortium (BRC) revealed in July that 90% of retailers have seen an increase in retail crime over the previous 12 months.
