Energy firms questioned about payment pressure on small firms

Energy regulator Ofgem has expressed concern to some of the UK's biggest energy companies about payment practices related to small firms.

Firms such as npower, Scottish Power, British Gas and EDF Energy are reportedly forcing up to 250,000 small businesses to pay their bills upfront, some by up to seven months in advance. The chief executive of Ofgem, Alistair Buchanan, called representatives of the energy firms to a meeting in London to discuss the practice, which he fears could put small businesses into difficulty.
