UK maintains Working Time opt-out
The UK can continue to opt out of the EU Working Time Directive, which caps the maximum working week at 48 hours unless a worker chooses to work beyond this.
Talks on phasing out the opt-out collapsed last week after a meeting between Member States, the European Parliament and the European Commission failed to progress. The UK and other countries have expressed their concerns that forcing the opt-out could damage countries' efforts to revive their economies in the downturn.
