Government launches consultation on mandatory drinks code

The Government has launched a consultation on the mandatory drinks code that could see a ban on irresponsible drinks promotions.

It is open to everyone and closes on 5 August 2009. The proposed code for pubs, clubs, off-licences and supermarkets was launched for consultation by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith. If adopted the code will ban promotions such as 'all you can drink for £10', speed drinking competitions and 'dentist's chairs', where alcohol is poured directly into customers' mouths.
