Businesses warned about falling foul of security licensing regulations

Businesses have been warned not to ignore the law when employing security staff.

Under current rules, frontline staff such as bouncers and security guards must be licensed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Law firm DWF has said that while most businesses may know of these licensing requirements, they may not be aware that backroom staff, such as those providing keyholder services or monitoring security cameras, may also need a licence. SIA can prosecute firms that do not comply with the law, DWF warned. Rupert Nevin at DWF said: "Whether or not a person needs a licence is not determined by the job description but by the type of activity they undertake. So for example, a receptionist may need one if they protect the premises."
