MP highlights 'unfair' tax burden on freelancers

The Professional Contractors Group (PCG) has welcomed an MP's call to abolish what it considers unfair tax legislation.

Liberal Democrat MP Lorely Burt introduced an Early Day Motion in Parliament to abolish the Intermediaries Legislation, also known as IR35. This states that freelancers pay a higher rate of tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs) than employees. Ms Burt told the PCG: "1.4 million freelancers in the UK are facing the perpetual threat of a costly and distressing HMRC investigation under IR35, which obliges them to spend time and money that could be better spent generating wealth for the UK economy."
