Outlook ‘remains bleak’ for high street while supermarket sales grow
Sales on the UK high street fell for a third consecutive month during the first half of September while supermarket sales continued to grow.
That's according to the Confederation of British Industry's Distributive Trades Survey for September. It revealed that 48% of retail businesses said their sales were down on a year ago.
The survey also highlighted that less demand on the high street has had an effect on the volume of orders made with suppliers. Andy Clarke, Chairman of the Distributive Trades Panel, said the increase in supermarket sales marked shoppers’ “migration to the value end of the market”.
