Watchdog sets out new challenges to food industry

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has set out challenges for the UK's food industry to help it tackle obesity and make food products healthier.

The watchdog has informed stakeholders in the industry, including food businesses and trade associations, of seven areas it expects food businesses to take action in.

The areas are all part of the Healthy Food Code of Good Practice, launched in January this year to tackle the rising obesity epidemic in Britain. The areas the food industry is expected to work on are:

  • a single front-of-pack labelling scheme.

  • smaller portions of high-energy and high-salt foods.

  • the marketing of food to children.

  • a reduction in consumption and the levels of saturated fat and sugar, particularly sugary drinks.

  • increased consumption of healthier foods.

  • a single set of key healthy eating messages.

  • nutritional information on food eaten away from the home.
