Start up figures highest in three quarters

Barclays Bank has released figures showing there were 98,000 new start up businesses in the first quarter of 2008.

That's the highest number since the third quarter of 2007 but there were almost 100,000 closures in the first quarter too.

The most popular sectors in which to start a business were business and financial services, construction, and retail, according to the Barclays survey. A spokesman for the bank warned that reductions in the number of start-ups, and a rise in the number of closures, could be expected throughout 2008.
