Government announces plans to reduce its carbon footprint

The UK Government has become the first in the world to announce plans to slash its carbon footprint by cutting the amount of energy used by its computer systems.

Information and communications technology is responsible for 20% of carbon emissions generated by Government offices.

Departments are being asked to take 18 steps, including switching off desktop computers outside office hours and reusing as much computer equipment as possible.

Cabinet Office Minister Tom Watson said:

"Worldwide, computers are responsible for the same quantity of carbon emissions as the airline industry. It is a serious problem that requires a serious solution."
