Scottish spin-outs need finance focus
Funding for university spin-out businesses should be focused on a smaller number of businesses to help them survive and grow, according to a Scotland-based innovation firm.
Targeting Innovation, which carried out the research, said that out of 200 spin-out businesses from Scottish universities since 1967, over half have less than ten employees and a third have failed. Just 16 firms have more than 50 employees (as reported by The Scotsman).
George Boag, chief executive of Targeting Innovation, said that a choice needed to be made between giving as many spin-outs as possible a chance, or focusing on a select few.
