High street sales fall, prices go up

Retail activity dropped on UK high streets for the second consecutive month in May, according to industry figures.

But while the Confederation of British Industry's (CBI) Distributive Trades Survey for May showed a dip in trade, it also revealed that retailers put up their prices at the fastest rate since 1992.

Retailers are also cutting back on orders while consumer demand is weak. Those who experienced a difficult month included retailers of household goods, hardware, DIY, china, furniture and carpet.
