Points based system could cause higher immigration levels

An independent think tank has rubbished the Government's claim that its new points based system (PBS) will reduce immigration levels.

Migrationwatch, chaired by Sir Andrew Green, says that the Government's PBS has no limits and will probably result in higher immigration levels.

Dismissing the Government's claims that the PBS will lower migration levels as 'pure spin', Migrationwatch says the system allows for potentially 26,000 job titles and is likley to lead to chaos and confusion. A spokesman for Migrationwatch said:

"Its main effect will be to open the skilled section of our labour force to cut price competition, thus reducing the incentive for employers to train British staff. Furthermore, the bar has been set very low. Anyone with a job offer and a Bachelor's degree need only earn £20,000 before tax. This is less than the average starting salary for a graduate."
