Union campaigns on tips row
Unite the Union is campaigning against the practices of restaurants using tips left by customers to make up staff wages to National Minimum Wage (NMW) levels.
Unite has claimed that a lack of transparency surrounding service charges means that customers' tips may make their way into restaurant takings instead of going to the restaurant staff they were intended for.
Unite protested outside a London restaurant after an employee was sacked for blowing the whistle on the practice of deducting from staff tips and is calling for action from the Government to stop restaurants from using tips to pay staff the legal minimum wage.
