Self-assessment tax return gets a revamp

Millions of new look tax returns have started to fall on doormats across the UK.

According to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) the new-style tax return is written in simpler language, has fewer questions to answer, and has an improved layout.

This will make it easier for the self-employed, who do not use an accountant to complete their return. The deadline for completion of paper tax returns has been moved to October 31 but the deadline for online returns remains January 31.

HMRC has devised a podcast to help tax agents get to grips with the new self-assessment form.
