Gordon Brown is the first European head of state to open an account on social networking and blogging website Twitter.
The service, which utilises Web 2.0 technology, has been devised to help people stay connected through the exchange of quick and frequent answers to simple questions.
A Whitehall taskforce has been established to help Government ministers use the technology, and learn from the differing ways in which people are using the technology.
