Poor sales force pub closures

British pubs are closing their doors at the rate of nearly four a day according to reports.

Poor sales and the effects of the smoking ban are said to be the driving forces behind so many closures, according to trade body the British Beer and Pub Association.

It says that 1,409 pubs closed down in 2007, averaging almost 27 a week. Urban pubs have been the worst affected. Pubs which don't focus on food or cannot provide adequate outdoor facilities for smokers have also been hit.
