EC HACCP proposals anger industry bodies

European Commission (EC) proposals which could see small businesses exempt from the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) food safety management systems have angered industry bodies and stakeholders.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), along with the British Retail Consortium and the Food and Drink Federation, said that the proposed amendment, which could see food industry businesses with less than ten staff exempt from keeping HACCP records, would undermine successful work done so far to improve food hygiene standards in businesses.

The group also argued that businesses with less than ten staff are often responsible for food poisoning outbreaks.
