Computer printers could flout data protection laws

The humble computer printer could be flouting data protection and human rights laws, an EU commissioner has claimed.

Franco Frattini, the Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security, has warned that machines which print a series of barely visible dots onto documents could be breaking European laws.

Printers from manufacturers including Xerox, Lexmark, Epson and Hewlett Packard have been identified as machines which encode documents.

However, Mr Frattini said that the technology does not always break the law as the encoded information does not necessarily include personal data.
