HMRC won't fine late filers

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will not issue penalties to people who filed their self-assessment tax returns by midnight on Friday 1 February 2008.

It says that although its system issues automatic penalties, it will overturn them for individuals who filed their returns by the midnight deadline on 1 February.

HMRC has decided to quash the penalties as people were unable to file their assessments on time because HMRC's online filing system crashed, leaving users unable to file their returns.
