Celebrity chefs applauded
The Soil Association has welcomed the campaigning efforts of television chefs Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver to improve the welfare standards of chicken production.
The chefs have also promoted a move to more free-range production. According to the Soil Association, intensively farmed chickens reared for meat can currently be housed in flocks of up to 40,000 birds. However, the Association's organic standards recommend flocks of 500.
