Devon firms defend cheque payments

Small firms in Devon are backing cheque payments as the Payments Council calls for cheques to be scrapped by 2018.

According to the Payments Council, cheques will account for just one in 50 payments by 2016. Many Devon shopkeepers are against the proposed ban as they rely on cheques to pay suppliers.

Their comments are supported by research from the Forum of Private Business (FPB), which revealed in December 2007 that 95% of businesses it surveyed paid other businesses, such as suppliers and utility firms, by cheque.
