Interest rates cut by 0.25%

Interest rates have been cut by 0.25% today (Thursday) to 5.5%.

The Bank of England's rate-setting Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) cut the cost of borrowing amid signs the economy is slowing down.

The reduction had been widely forecast by analysts, but the decision was also thought to have been one of the hardest the MPC has had to make in recent years, the BBC reported.
