Beware legal pitfalls of the office party

Business owners are being warned how to avoid the legal implications that could be caused by the office Christmas party.

It follows research by Peninsula Business Services suggesting nearly nine out of 10 bosses have received a harassment complaint following a staff event.

Law firm Latimer Hinks has produced a guide for businesses to avoid the common legal pitfalls, including ensuring the catering is suitable for people of all faiths and dietary requirements and that non-alcoholic drinks should be available.

A spokesman said:

"Employers are vicariously liable for their employees' behaviour if it takes place in the course of employment. This can include Christmas parties, even if they are held away from the office."
