Shoppers urged to stick to the high street
The Forum of Private Business (FPB) is urging shoppers to turn their backs on the multiples and shop in their local high street this Christmas.
It claimed the supermarkets' buying power allowed them to take advantage of their size to undermine smaller, independent retailers by drawing people away from them.
The FPB says shoppers will find unrivalled levels of service, choice and quality if they stick to their local shops.
A spokesman said:
"Despite expensive Christmas advertising campaigns to convince us that larger retailers, such as supermarkets, provide the best range of food, drink and gifts, the FPB believes it is high street shops that offer unrivalled levels of service, choice and quality."
