Screw tops overtaking wine corks
Increasing numbers of people are turning their backs on the traditional bottle of wine with a cork and reaching instead for the more user-friendly screw top.
The figures come from supermarket giant Tesco, which said between 55% and 65% of wine in its stores was now sold in bottles with screw tops.
Wine connoisseurs have objected to screw tops because they do not allow small amounts of oxygen to reach red wines as they age. However, screw tops prevent the contamination which occasionally happens because of chemicals in the cork, the Manchester Evening News reported.
