More firms register for VAT
The number of businesses registering for VAT increased by 2% in 2006, to reach 1.96 million by the start of 2007, according to new Government figures.
The statistics, published by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) showed a 21% increase in the number of VAT registered business since 1995.
There were 182,200 new registrations between 2005 and 2006, a rise of 0.3% on 2005. The number of de-registrations stood at 143,100, a fall of 0.3% between 2005 and 2006, to reach their lowest level since records began in 1994.
