HMRC can be sued over errors

Firms have been given the go-ahead to sue HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) over errors, after a self-employed builder claimed he lost £500,000 because of delays and mistakes made by the taxman.

The Appeal Court overturned a 2006 High Court judgment that said HMRC has no duty of care when negligence occurs.

The Appeal Court said it was fair and reasonable that the builder should seek compensation because one of the errors went beyond an administrative mistake, Business Zone reported.
