North East business numbers lag behind
There should be around 30,000 more businesses in the North East than there are, according to a study which points to a lack of risk taking.
The report, put together for the North East Regional Skills Partnership by Tyne and Wear Research and Information, said that for a region of its size, the North East should have around 70,000 businesses. It actually has 46,000.
The figures are around 40% below the UK average. The report said the situation was due to lower incomes, a relatively large public sector and a relatively large average firm size, The Journal reported.
