London retail sales still strong
Central London has escaped the slowdown in retail sales and figures show shoppers in the capital are still prepared to spend.
The monthly London Retail Sales Monitor (RSM) carried out by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) showed that like-for-like sales were up by 11% in October, compared to a year earlier.
Visitor numbers were also up, with designer clothing and accessories being the big sellers. There was a slowdown in the purchases of large household items, however, because of consumer caution.
