Evidence points to high street slow-down
New figures from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) have revealed that shoppers are beginning to tighten their belts ahead of the festive shopping period.
According to the CBI's latest figures, 33% of retailers' year-on-year figures were down in the first half of October.
Sector-wise, clothing retailers reported a drop on 2006 figures for the same period, a fall the CBI says could be owing to consumer reluctance to buy autumn ranges.
42% of retailers reported that sales were up during the latest period surveyed.
A CBI spokesman said:
"Although slightly better sales are expected in November, retailers' hopes have been disappointed for the past few months, and they anticipate only subdued growth in the important run-up to Christmas. As consumers begin to feel the pinch, they will look to retailers who offer them value for money."
