UK minimum wage among highest in the world

Britain's National Minimum Wage (NMW) is one of the highest in the world, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), which is blaming a series of above-average earnings increases for the situation.

The CBI was speaking out as it delivered its submission to the Low Pay Commission (LPC) on the issue.

It says the NMW has increased by 53% since it was introduced in 1999, compared to average earnings growth of 38.8%. The CBI says there should be only a modest increase in the NMW in 2008.

Only France and Australia have higher minimum wages than the UK.
