Fall in eBay and PayPal phishing attempts

The number of phishing e-mails purporting to be from eBay or its financial arm PayPal has fallen dramatically in a year.

The percentage of fraudulent e-mails pretending to be from the two organisations fell to 21% in September, down from 85% a year earlier.

The figures come from IT security firm Sophos, which said the fall was partly due to efforts by eBay and PayPal to educate customers about protecting themselves against efforts to steal their financial details.

A Sophos spokesman said:

"In September 2006, almost nine out of ten phishing e-mails were trying to steal information from unwary eBay/PayPal customers, now it's more like one in five.

"That's an impressive turnaround by anyone's standards."
