That was the message from Competitiveness Minister Stephen Timms, who has been meeting a panel of businesspeople to look at ways of boosting growth in the region.

Although statistics show the North East trails other areas when it comes to entrepreneurship, Mr Timms said the region had huge potential.

He wants to encourage more small firms to expand and is keen for more local people to start their own enterprises, the Northern Echo reported.
